Gus Chan
I am a photojournalist and former photographer and picture editor at the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Before joining the PD, I worked at the Detroit News, where I covered local and national stories.
As a Cleveland-based journalist, I’ve covered events big and small, from presidential campaigns to high school football.
My passion has been the photographic projects that allow for more in-depth storytelling. I’ve worked on stories ranging from domestic violence to religious faith. Being a photojournalist has allowed me to bear witness to some of the most important stories in Cleveland history. I am often asked what was my favorite assignment.
As a long-suffering Cleveland sports fan, covering the Cleveland Cavaliers on their road to an NBA championship would rank near the top. Having a front row seat to the first championship in 52 years and then seeing an estimated 1.3 million fans celebrating downtown was definitely a highlight.
My professional awards and recognition include Photographer of the Year in the Associated Press, Ohio News Photographers Association, Cleveland Press Club, and Society of Professional Journalist competitions. I am also a two-time National Headliner Award, Dart Award and National Association of Hispanic Journalist winner as well as a finalist in the American Society of Newspaper Editors and National Association of Black Journalists contests.
I am currently accepting freelance assignments.
